South Strand Moms

Educational Opportunities and Programs

On-going educational programs and opportunities:

The South Strand area from Andrews to Murrells Inlet is rich in history, art and beauty and several amazing and unique organizations offer on-going educational opportunities. We will add and share these family friendly opportunities that occur throughout the year. Stay tuned and check back often as they get added and revised.

HOBCAW BARONY:

Hobcaw Barony is a 16,000 acres tract on a peninsula called Waccamaw Neck between the Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in Georgetown County. Hobcaw Barony is a research institute, rich in history and offering many opportunities for families and children’s programs for continuing education.

Their offerings for kids can generally be divided into two categories: field studies and public programs. Field studies are the preK-12 “field trip” offerings; for each grade level, there are two programs (one forest ecology, one social studies) based on SC state standards. You can find a listing here: https://hobcawbarony.org/for-teachers/field-studies-pre-k-12. Field studies are scheduled through the Sara Beth Freytag, Coordinator of Children and Youth Education, and are $5/child; 30-minute virtual adaptations are available for $50.

Public programs, on the other hand, are programs offered on specific days and times and vary seasonally. These require reservations through the website: https://hobcawbarony.org/visit/childrens-programs. Currently posted are programs from now until February 2023. The most popular public program is Coastal Ecology Camp.

Brookgreen Gardens:

Brookgreen Gardens offers many education opportunities for youth and adults. Their field trip curriculums are designed to work with teachers and help them prepare students for their Brookgreen visit and be able to measure what students learned afterward.

They offer monthly programs for homeschool students, which gives them an opportunity to visit the Gardens, interact with other students, and learn in a group environment.

Children’s Nature & Sensory Trail is located near the Enchanted Storybook Forest and the Whispering Wings Butterfly House. It is free with garden admission. Children ages 6 and above will enjoy “Sensory,” “Information,” “Creative Physical Activity,” and “Unstructured Play” stations that reflect the nature and history of Brookgreen Gardens.
